This story offers up a really unique take on the Mulan story and for me this was one of the books that took me longer to get absorbed in reading but as the story went on I really did find myself loving the story and was delighted I stuck with this. Following Mulan into Diyu had a very Alice in Wonderland dreamlike quality to it. Although a bit tougher on Mulan than Mushu, I just adored his character. Like Mushu in the original version of Mulan, he added a great deal of humor to the story.
